The Slocum Independent School District has been meeting the educational needs of the children in Southeast Anderson County since the latter 1800s. Located in a rural area on State Highway 294, Slocum High School and Slocum Elementary School have a combined enrollment of approximately 380 students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.
In recent years the district and schools have been recognized for exceptional performance on several occasions.

The district has also received ratings of superior for eight consecutive fiscal years on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas for exceptional management of the financial resources of the district.
Students enrolled in Slocum High School have excelled in University Interscholastic League academic and athletic competitions. They have competed individually in UIL State Championship meets in academics and athletics numerous times and six athletic teams have qualified for UIL state tournaments or meets. The 2009 Mustang boy’s basketball team captured the Class A Division II State Championship, the first in the school’s history.
In recent years the district’s effort to continually improve the quality of the schools is evidenced by the district:
- establishing full day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs.
- adding 12 academic classrooms.
- maintaining a low pupil-teacher ratio in all grades.
- expanding the opportunities for accelerated instruction.
- installing the latest in technology for teaching and learning.
- constructing a new agriculture science and technology building.
In addition to the opportunities for increased learning the district has refurbished existing buildings, constructed new athletic fields and provided a new playground for elementary students.
The district is proud to still hold true to being a small, family oriented district. The growth of the district has been filled with many accomplishments and more challenges are to come. The schools are committed to providing all students with the foundation to be life long learners and productive citizens. Slocum ISD provides students with the ability to think at a higher level that includes problem solving and the basic knowledge of reading, mathematics, writing, science and social studies. "Striving for Excellence in Education" is the motto of Slocum ISD and the district is committed to meeting the expectations of the motto.
